Update to School Project!

Plan for 2011-2015

(updated 17/03/11)

In July 2010, Judith and Malcolm Gigg (ARA Architects; Exmouth) visited the village in order to assess the plot of land assigned for the school location. During this trip, Malcolm drew up the plans for the school building. Since then we have started fundraising to raise money to build the school.

Below, we see Malcolm Gigg of ARA Architects Ltd, in Buturi Village, exchanging ideas for the school building with a village elder. You see how excited the children are at the prospect of a new school. Left of Malcolm is Joseph who is at Teachers Training College in Mwanza. On completion of his training he will return to the village as the full time teacher.

In May 2011, a team of four charity members, including Michael Rose (Private builder) will be visiting the village to commence phase one of the school project – laying the foundation of the building. We are currently raising money for phase two - building four of the eight classrooms; each costing £4600. Malcolm has cleverly designed each room so that they can build one room at a time as funding allows. We estimate that the building of the school will take 1-4 years depending on how fast we raise the funds to complete the school (a total of £36,800).

If you are interested in finding out more information about our progress or going out to visit Buturi. We welcome all volunteers (builders, fundraisers, teachers, students) to be apart of this project. Please contact us at info@buturi-project.co.uk

Schools Development

Infants School

This picture shows the children in 2009, when the school first opened. The hope of a building was sufficient for the children to start schooling! And here you see the children hard at work in an open-air classroom! The books were funded by Sidmouth schools.

When it’s raining the class move into the house of Regina Oluoch who is Chairperson of the School Project Committee. Look at the children’s faces. Learning gives hope: a chance of a better life; even at this tender age.

We can help by providing funds for improvement but we believe that the local community must first take responsibility for its own future. For that reason we work closely with the village elders.

A year later you see the children wearing uniforms which the parents provided: they were so enthusiastic they would not wait for funding.

The School Needs a Building

The school is functioning and a temporary structure was erected. A purpose-built school is our next step. As a result of the generosity of ARA Architects of Exmouth, who visited the village at their own expense - we have drawings for the proposed school and an estimate of the cost of construction. Thanks Malcolm!
